Jersey's First Men's Gymnastics Regional Judge

Performance squad member, Matthew Hill, has qualified as the Island's first 'British Gymnastics' Regional Men's judge. Following three weekend's of rigorous training at Swindon School of Gymnastics, he passed with the highest mark on the course gaining and impressive 92%. The examination consisted of a theory paper and practical examination involving the marking of twenty-eight routines on six pieces of equipment – including Olympic floor routines performed by GB team members, Daniel Keatings and Kristian Thomas.

Matthew is now able to judge at County level and will therefore be a great asset to Island gymnastics as every club is required to provide a judge at UK competitions. As an experienced gymnast and Level 1 coach, he by-passed the first 'Club' qualification and now intends to progress to National level.

Cameron Aird selected for Southern Region Squad

10-year old Cameron Aird from the Boy's Performance Squad has been selected for the 2011 Southern Region Training Squad. The squad selection was based on the results of the Southern Region Championships held at Dynamo School of Gymnastics in Southampton last October. Cameron excelled at this competition taking the Vault championship title and finishing just outside the medals in fourth place on Rings and High Bar. His consistent performance against a large field of 31 gymnasts produced a very credible 5th place overall.

In his under 11 age group, Cameron will train with five other gymnasts all from Dynamo School of Gymnastics and Basingstoke Gymnastics Club. The training will consist of monthly sessions held throughout 2011 at both these clubs. Cameron will be working in purpose-built gymnastic training facilities and will have the opportunity to learn from the best gymnasts and coaches in the Southern Region. He will also be competing in various UK competitions, the first being the Setwork Qualifier in Basingstoke at the end of March.

Cameron's selection is also a great accolade for Men's Head Coach coach, Ben Frith, who has nurtured many successful gymnasts and Island Games medal winners. In 2009, following the NatWest Island Games in Aland, Ben was awarded the Tony Richomme Memorial Award in recognition of his long and distinguished career as both a coach and competitor.

Delighted with the news of Cameron's selection, he commented: "This level of training will be a fantastic experience for Cameron and will help accelerate his learning enormously. He will be able to perfect skills that we just can't teach in Jersey without certain facilities such as safety pits and modern tumble tracks and sprung floors. There's no doubt he has the talent and with all the hours he puts in to the sport he thoroughly deserves this opportunity. It will also enable myself and father/coach Andy to learn new teaching and technical skills whilst accompanying Cameron to his training sessions."
